Family Services has provided comprehensive services to victims of rape and molestation throughout Tulare County since 1992. The Rape Crisis Center helps approximately 30 new victims of assault each month, of which 65% are females aged 12 to 17.

Sexual assault is any forced or unwanted sexual activity or any sexual activity without consent.   Sexual assault is always an act of violence, even if there are no physical injuries. Sexual assault is a crime. The majority of sexual assault incidents occur in the victim's own home or at the home of a friend or relative. Over 90% of victims are female.

Rape victims are never to blame for their assault. There is no one right way to act during an assault. The highest priority is to survive with the least amount of injury. Reaching out for support is part of the healing process. Our Rape Crisis Center can help with recovery. Our services include:

Crisis Hotline - 24-hour confidential information, referral and crisis counseling line (559) 732-7273.

In Person Crisis Response - 24-hour first response emotional support and advocacy at hospitals, law enforcement facilities, or the Rape Crisis Center office for victims and their significant others.

Sexual Assault Survivor Support Groups - These groups can be joined at any time and present information and support to those healing from molestation, rape, or other sexual exploitation or abuse.

Individual Counseling - Family Services' therapists are trained to treat individuals dealing with issues related to sexual assault.

Criminal Justice and Court Support - Advocates will accompany victims and their significant others to law enforcement interviews or Court appearances.

Follow-up support services - Advocates are available for as long as requested to provide information and referral, support counseling and education, and advocacy.

Self-Defense Programs - Structured classes intended to enhance awareness and personal safety are available to school and community groups or individuals.

Rape Prevention Education - Prevention Educators talk with adult groups and with adolescents and young adults at middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout Tulare County to promote safety awareness and behavior, and to enhance awareness of the nature and consequences of forced or unwanted sexual activity. Educators are also available to speak to parents about keeping children safe from exploitation.

The Rape Crisis Center also provides general community education programs about sexual assault in our community and available services to health care providers, educators, counselors, youth leaders, pastors, parents, or other interested individuals or groups.
